They are the firstfruits to the Lord. — Leviticus 23:17

The holiday of Pentecost, which we commemorate today, has agricultural roots. Jewish farmers observed the Feast of Weeks, which commemorated the hand of God who provided the harvests, fifty days following Passover (Lev. 23:15–22).

Later, the Lord celebrated a fresh harvest on the Day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit descended on a small number of Christians fifty days before Passover and traveled across Jerusalem, bringing in a different kind of produce. Men, women, and kids who were added to the church were these firstfruits (Acts 2:38–46).

The agricultural roots of Pentecost serve as a reminder that a world filled with lost souls is ripe for harvest (John 4:35). We are God's fruit as followers of Christ, but we are also called to serve as His farmers.

Do we contribute to the fresh harvest's arrival?

There would not be a harvest without the Holy Spirit. In the vast harvest fields of the planet, there is undoubtedly a humble location where I might toil for the duration of my brief day in service to the crucified Jesus.
