I will go to the king, . . . and if I perish, I perish. — Esther 4:16

Queen Esther felt the same way. She wished not to pass away. To acknowledge her need for God's particular assistance, she called for a three-day fast. In accordance with Persian tradition, even though she was his wife, the king could order her execution if she visited him without his permission and he became upset. Esther, though, risked it because she loved her people so much.

Blood was spilled to cover the cost of our redemption from sin. Lord, make us conscious of the price of liberty, which includes the brave men and women who gave their lives to end tyranny.
