Having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. — 1 Timothy 6:8

It is difficult for us to truly declare, "Having food and clothing, with these we shall be content" (1 Timothy 6:8), as did the apostle Paul. Let's emulate Arsenius in our ongoing struggle against the alluring materialism of our culture. We can all rejoice at the sight of all the stuff we don't need when we browse the marketplaces and shopping centers.

But that's just the beginning. The next step is to become much wiser with our money, much more giving with what we give to others, and much more self-sacrificing with what God has given us.

Being happy with what we already have is being content, not having what we want. Lord, help me to be truly smart so that I can be content with my lot and avoid focusing on things that are temporary.
