Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. — Psalm 127:1

Solomon spent a time in his life traveling along essentially the same route. He was considerably too extravagant in creating his palace, too busy with showy horses and chariots, and far too status-conscious in his marriages to numerous pagan brides after constructing the temple for the glory of God. As a result, his home was in disarray and his realm was damaged by conflict and internal turmoil (1 Ki. 10–11). Some Bible historians think that Solomon's bitter experience inspired him to write Psalm 127 in his later years. Finally, he had seen the pointlessness of trying to do things his way.

The route we take is one of human insight and independence. It causes emptiness and frustration. The way of God entails relying on Him, obeying Him, and believing in Him. It results in fulfillment and delight, perhaps not entirely on earth but entirely in paradise. Let's decide to live God's way each day.

Those who leave the decision to God always receive the best from Him. Without living each day for the Lord, life is pointless, meaningless, and of no use. Let's make a fresh commitment to living virtuously; anything less is just not an option.
