To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: . . . a time to weep, and a time to laugh. — Ecclesiastes 3:1,4

We're told that laughing is healthy by doctors and psychologists. Given that the Bible states that "a cheerful heart does good, like medicine" (Proverbs 17:22), this is unquestionably accurate.

However, the Bible makes a distinction between good and poor humor. According to Ecclesiastes' author, the laughing of those who reject God has no more worth than the sound of thorns crackling in a fire (Eccl. 7:6). Any comedy that minimizes people or pokes fun at immorality is frowned upon by God. Sin is never anything to joke about.

Give us a joyful heart, Lord. And encourage us to exercise discernment so that we can laugh at the appropriate times and on the appropriate topics.
Genuine laughter has a lot of face value. Laughter has the same staying power as music; when its melody is heard, life's problems vanish.
