It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. — John 16:7

Most of us understand the significance of Christ's conception, when God took on human form; his death on the cross; and his resurrection, when the dominion of death was overthrown. What about His ascension, though? Why is that occasion so significant?

Everyone's lives were impacted by Jesus' visit to His Father, including believers and non-believers. He sent the Spirit, who would demonstrate to humanity their need for a Savior, after ascending back to heaven (John 16:8). Jesus predicted that the Spirit will also serve as the believer's teacher (14:17; 16:13–15) and helper (v. 7).

Following His resurrection, Christ's continued mission would have been constrained had He stayed on this planet. Without the Holy Spirit, He could not have done what He is currently doing.

On Ascension Day, we are reminded that our elevated Lord is not only carrying on His mission for us, but is also attracting sinners to Himself via the power of the Holy Spirit.

In addition to encouraging believers, the Holy Spirit also convicts sinners. The Spirit was sent by Christ the Lord to convict us of our sin and arrogance and to point us toward the Savior who died on the cross for us.
