The Lord on high is mightier . . . than the mighty waves of the sea. — Psalm 93:4

The considerably smaller Muskegon Lake was whipped into a frenzy by a storm that raced off Lake Michigan. Twelve sailboats were torn from their moorings and hurled towards shore by the might of the wind and waves. Although some of the escaped boats were saved, three of them went down, and another was severely wrecked on the rocks.

The psalmist used "the mighty waves of the sea" to represent the awesome power of God. He might have seen hurricane-force winds bringing enormous waves from the Mediterranean Sea slamming against the western coasts of Philistia and Israel. Additionally, the storms that pounded the little but sometimes turbulent Sea of Galilee helped him to understand the power of God.

The Lord uses His power, he claimed, but how? God uses His power to hold things together, not to tear them apart. The psalmist declared, "Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved" (93:1). He said that God's statements were "very sure" (v. 5).

God's strength serves as the foundation for both the world and the Word. That reality gives us a lot of comfort in a chaotic, destructive, and unsettling culture. Praise God that He is stronger than the seas with His might!

The same God who holds the cosmos also holds you. I praise God for using his enormous might to raise the mountains, disperse the churning seas, and create the soaring skies.
