Secular counselors teach us to rely on our own inner resources for strength. But that is completely implausible. The truth is that we lack the ability to handle all of life's stresses and difficulties on our own. Even the most powerful among us have flaws. We are prone to swinging emotions, evil temptations, and compulsive behaviors.
In 2 Corinthians 12:7–10, the apostle Paul made reference to a flaw he called a "thorn in the flesh." He didn't, however, persevere on his own. He begged for deliverance, but the Lord instead gave him strength to withstand his immense challenges.
We are compelled to admit that we require a source of strength outside of ourselves during times of conflict and defeat. And we can be glad that there is an unending supply of grace from God that we can rely upon.
