This would not occur if one kept the first commandment. However, man forgets the true God in his endeavors to create gods out of money, material goods, pleasure, knowledge, and other people. But nothing that was made can ever take the place that God intended for Himself in our hearts.
When we accept Jesus as our personal Savior, our worship of God becomes more concentrated since He is God in the flesh (Jn. 1:14). However, why does God demand that we only love and adore Him? We get eternal life from Him (Col. 1:13–18), in Him we live, move, and have our being (Acts 17:28). He has the right to declare, "No other gods!" as only He is the live, genuine God who both created and atoned for us.
