Israel took the third commandment so seriously that scribes used to wait to write the name Yahweh (Jehovah) until after they had taken a bath and changed into new garments. After finishing it, they would take another bath and change back into their old clothing.
When God's name is invoked to support a promise, the commandment also deals with breaching that commitment. But even when God is not mentioned, every commitment we make to someone else is made in His presence and is therefore just as enforceable as if we had prayed in His name.
How all of us are damned by the third commandment! But praise God for the Savior-sounding name Jesus. He offers us the forgiveness and support required to uphold the third commandment and develop into men and women who are renowned for keeping their word.
