This inclination is not exclusive to Christians. Some persuasive preachers encourage leading a "abundant life" of success and prosperity by optimistic thinking, increased religious fervor, or financial contributions in exchange for God's blessing.
Naturally, the Bible instructs us to think optimistically (Philippians 4:8) and to give generously (2 Corinthians 8:2). However, a lot of "prosperity preaching" is devoid of the sustaining realities of Christ's atoning death for sin and His call to godly living. In addition to being loving, good, and generous, our God is also just, holy, and strict. He detests sin and won't make a deal with evil.
While hearing about the benefits Christ brings is excellent, we also need to practice repentance and self-denial. A well-rounded meal that incorporates the difficult truths of taking up one's cross and following Christ is preferable to a cafeteria-style Christianity, as stated in Mark 8:34. Such sustenance promotes the development of spiritual strength and Christlike character. And do you realize how much I need that?
