Leaders of the Allies could not have allowed Adolf Hitler to surrender and then reinstalled him as the head of his nation. But it is just what King Ahab, a despicably cruel ruler who instigated two wars against God's people, did to Ben Hadad. Ahab was eventually put to death on the instructions of the exact man he had spared, precisely as God's prophet had foreseen (1 Ki. 22).
This is not a guide on how to handle adversaries. Instead, Ahab's tragic example highlights the risk of employing half-measures to combat sin.
Never compromise your integrity or your self-control or your sexual purity. Instead, take drastic action to combat your sinful tendencies. (Read what Jesus said about the eye or hand that leads to sin in Matthew 5:29–30.) Your wicked tendencies must also be "put to death" (Col. 3:5).
Avoid placing yourself in circumstances where you can succumb to temptation. Ask God to give you the strength to fight sin with all of your might. Half-measures will never work.
Being moderate in sin is impossible, just as being moderate in death is impossible. We cannot afford to experiment with fire or provoke a snake's bite; we cannot afford to believe that immorality offers any genuine pleasure.
