Other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased, and produced. — Mark 4:8

The sower and the soils parable in Mark 4 illustrates the significance of how we react to God's word. It teaches us that the condition of the soil, rather than the farmer's expertise or the seed's potency, determines whether a crop will succeed or fail.

Some listeners are like fertile ground; the message sinks deeply into their souls. Other audiences merely bounce the seed off of them since they resemble the parking lot of a church. Others, though, stifle potential growth like a weed patch.

Not all sermons are "the fine art of talking in someone else's sleep." Similar to how ill people require medicine or how crops require rain, we must "drink in" the lessons of the Bible. Jesus warned, "Take heed what you hear" (v. 24) because of this. It is largely up to you whether or not you find value in a sermon.

The seed establishes itself in healthy soil and will soon produce fruit. If God's Word is fostered in our hearts, it will grow and bear fruit, just as a seed placed in rich soil has life and will take root.
