You shall not covet your neighbor’s house . . . nor anything that is your neighbor’s. — Exodus 20:17

The root of coveting is conflating our wants and necessities, which is why we frequently feel the need to get more and more. We fail to realize that knowing God brings greater fulfillment in life than amassing material possessions.

The tenth commandment may seem like an afterthought in comparison to such major offenses as murder, theft, lying, and adultery, but it is the cornerstone of all the other commandments and guarantees happiness. It is the sole directive that focuses on an attitude rather than an action that is outlawed. However, it serves as a deterrent to the temptation to transgress the other nine commandments.

David committed adultery, theft, and murder as a result of his covetous desire for another man's wife (2 Samuel 11). And the need for ever-increasing pleasure, power, or wealth can ruin familial ties and lead to deception of others. Additionally, covetousness prevents us from developing and keeping a proper connection with God because it is idolatry (Col. 3:5).

Help us, Lord, to find satisfaction in You.

Not getting all you want prevents you from being content. Help us, God, to look above and lean on Your unrivaled love when we start to crave more and more of the money and possessions of this world.
